Wishes to students by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC IAS Topper

I know a lot of you would have checked whether you have cleared prelims or not. Best of luck for mains for those who are clearing. And those who think they wont, dont lose hope. I have failed twice i know it hurts. The first attempt i couldnt clear prelims. It was a nightmare for months for me to begin with. BUT DONT LOSE HOPE( i know it seems easy to say but difficult to ask of anyone). For those who are in doubt, you also start preparing.

Take one-two days rest. I went to Connaught place( i think some pizza place called Diggin) and some slices. After that hanged out with my friends till 4-5 in the evening and went back home straight. Then i opened up my books and notes which i had tied up and kept in the store room because i was overconfident that i wont have to read it again. That was another struggle. It was worth it.

After that back to studying. Try building a schedule for yourself. First few days will be tough. But WHEN HAVE GOOD THINGS COME EASY IN LIFE.

I’ll will share my study routine shortly. Till then enjoy 1-2 days. Be relaxed. Coming 3-4 months of serious study time, can change your life. I can tell you that in just 1 week of my result🙂

Also i am going to be keeping things real and honest here as much as i can. I’ll also share rudimentary things like which colour pen i used or did i make diagrams or not and others as believe before writing answers your mind should be focussed on writing answers and not others things. I had those troubles so i would want nobody suffers from that

Also, i am really terrible at typing, because i havent really been typing and talking for a long time. So bear with me there🙂🙏

Timetable of Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

Because the traditional practice of making schedule like
8 – wake up
8:30 – start stuyding
8:30-10:30 – subject 1
11-1 – subject 2
1-2 lunch and break
This type of scheduling often didnt leave a lot of breating space. And the moment you mess up one slot, you dont feel like following the next one with enthusiasm🙂

eventually being frustrated with all of that, i came to a schedule that best suited me. I’ll share that now.

I used to wake up every day at 8 and HAD TO START STUDYING BY 8:30. This is the most important thing. Fix when you begin so you have an idea of how you are doing everyday! Even if i would get up at 8:25- i have to get back to study at 8:30

After that you know you have to study three things- optionals, general studies and current affairs!

My day was divided into three BIG SLOTS- first slot for optional which was the longest as you are not tired in the morning and doing LONG HOURS IN THE MORNING WILL KEEP YOU MOTIVATED THAT YOU ARE STUDYING WELL

after that it was the general studies slot and after that it was current affairs

The timing i gave for each slot was NOT FIXED AS THAT LEFT ME WITH A LOT OF FLEXIBILITY TO STUDY WHAT I WANT AND HOW I WANT

My suggestion, whatever your optional is- focus on it in the first slot which is the longest🙂

Also, i didnt like the idea of studying for two hours and then breaking it up. My study slots were longest. Morning one at least 3-4 hours of continous study and gs one- may be around 2-3 hrs and CURRENT AFFAIRS THING WAS FIXED AT 3 HOURS everyday

By this logic, you will study optional EVERYDAY which is most important as optional has the potential to get you an extremely good rank🙂

Also, getting used to schedule takes some time so dont beat yourself if you are not able to follow it up for the first few days. Keep at it and once you understand how to follow it, you’ll get extremely comfortable with it. Also, REST IS UPTO YOU. IF I WAS STUDYING FOR 3-6 HOURS STRAIGHT, i WOULD TAKE REST FOR 1-1.5 to 2 HOURS.

Prelims Preparation Strategy by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

SOURCES FOR PRELIMS

HISTORY ANCIENT – OLD NCERTS + TAMIL NADU BOARD

MEDIEVAL – OLD NCERTS + TAMIL NADU BOARD

MODERN – BIPIN CHANDRA NCERT + SPECTRUM MODERN INDIA

ART AND CULTURE – NITIN SINGHANIA + NCERT FINE ARTS BOOK + SOME TOPICS  LIKE LITERATURE FROM NIOS MODULE ON CULTURE + SOME TOPICS LIKE DANCES, LOCAL DANCE  FORMS ETC FROM CCRT WEBSITE.

NOTE – SINCE THIS WAS MY THIRD ATTEMPT, I HAD MADE NOTES OF OLD NCERTS AND SPECTRUM’S MODERN INDIA. FOR TAMIL NADU BOARD, I DID NOT MAKE NOTES. I READ THEM AS I HAD DURING THREE YEARS OF TIME DURING THREE ATTEMPT

ALSO READ PT365 ON ART ANDS CULTURE

GEOGRAPHY– NEW NCERTS -( INDIA’S PHYSICAL ENVIRONMENT + FUNDAMENTALS OF PHYSCIAL GEOGRAPHY) + GC LEONG + PMF IAS. CHOOSE  EITHER GC LEONG OR PMF.  I PREFERRED PMF IAS. NO NOTE MAKING HERE FOR GENERAL STUDIES, ONLY FOR MY OPTIONAL.

POLITY LAXMIKANTH .REVISING IT MULTIPLE TIMES IS THE KEY+ PT365 ON POLITY AND CONSTITUTION

ECONOMY –    SRIRAM IAS NOTES + MRUNAL’S BOOK ON ECONOMY( READ IT ONCE) + VERY FEW SELECTIVE VIDEOS OF MRUNAL ON ECONOMY(OLD VIDEOS)+ PT365(VERY IMPORTANT FOR ECONOMY)

SCIENCE AND TECH ONLY RELIED ON PT 365 FROM VISION IAS(NOTHING ELSE)

SCHEMES AND OTHER MISCELLANEOUS STUFF –PT365 MODULE ON SCHEMES

INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS – PT365 MODULE ONLY

ENVIRONMENT- HAD READ SHANKAR ONCE BUT FOUND IT BORING SO I SHIFTED TO PMFIAS NOTES ON ENVIRONMENT AND REVISED THEM 5-6 TIMES + WATCHED VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE ON DIFFERENT ENVIRONMENTAL LAWS TO UNDERSTAND THEM IN DETAILS+ PT365(MOST IMPORTANT PT365 THAT YOU WILL READ)

ABOUT HOW I DID NATIONAL PARKS, TIGER RESERVES, AND OTHERS STUFF- I WILL BE SHARING PHOTOS

SOCIAL ISSUES – PT365 ONLY

SIDE NOTE – MADE NOTES MAINLY OF HISTORY. NO NOTE MAKING FOR PRELIMS FOR ANY OTHER TOPICS UNTIL AND UNLESS I FELT IT CANT BE DONE FROM BOOK.

READ AND REVISE YOUR PT365 VERY VERY WELL.

I HAD READ TAMIL NADU BOARD BOOKS AS THIS WAS MY THIRD ATTEMPT. FOR THOSE GOING FOR THEIR FIRST ATTEMPT NEXT YEAR, FOCUS ON ONLY ONE

CSAT Preparation Strategy by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

FOR CSAT

NO BOOKS – THEY ARE VERY BORING

SEARCH ANY TOPIC LIKE SEATING ARRANGEMENT, NUMBER SYSTEM OR LCM/HCF ON YOUTUBE AND THERE ARE MANY VIDEOS FROM MANY YOUTUBE CHANNELS LIKE ADDA247, OR STUDY IQ – WHERE WITHIN THE VIDEO  ITSELF – THEY GIVE SOME  QUESTIONS AND SOLVE IT THEN AND THERE ITSELF.

DO THIS FOR EVERY TOPIC THAT YOU FIND DIFFICULT. WATCH 3-5 VIDEOS AND STOP THE VIDEO WHEN THEY GIVE THE QUESTION AND TRY TO SOLVE IT AND THEN SEE HOW THEY SOLVE IT.

AFTER THAT SOLVE CSAT TESTS  AND MARK OUT TOPICS FROM WHERE YOU FIND IT DIFFICULT TO SOLVE QUESTIONS AND WATCH VIDEOS ON THOSE TOPICS SPECIFICALLY

THE BEST THING ABOUT THIS TECHNIQUE IS THAT IT IS NOT BORING LIKE READING SOLUTIONS FROM BOOKS

SIDE NOTE – DO NOT TAKE CSAT FOR GRANTED. IT RUINS MANY PEOPLE GOOD GENERAL STUDIES PERFORMANCE. DO AS MANY TESTS AS POSSIBLE

COME OUT OF THE SURVIVAL TACTIC THAT WE WILL DO ENOUGH TO CLEAR THE HURDLE OF 67 MARKS.  HERE EVEN IF ONE  OR TWO COMPREHENSION QUESTIONS GO WRONG, THINGS WILL BE DIFFICULT AS NEGATIVE IS HIGH HERE AS COMPARED TO GS(-0.8 VS -0.67)

TRY TO SOLVE AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE LIKE YOU DO IN CASE OF GENERAL STUDIES PAPER. TRY TO SCORE CLOSE TO 80-95 RANGE AND IF POSSIBLE ABOVE 100 TO BE 100 PERCENT SURE.

FOR COMPREHENSIONS, SOLVING AS MANY QUESTIONS AS POSSIBLE IS THE TRICK. FOR THIS LOOKING BACK AT PREVIOUS YEAR QUESTIONS AND MATCHING ANSWERS WITH THE OFFICIAL ANSWER KEYS MAY PROVIDE SOME HELP

DONT GO TO CSAT WITH A PRE CONCEIVED NOTION THAT COMPREHENSION HELP US GET PAST THAT SCORE OF 67. COMPREHENSIONS ARE TRICKY AND OPTIONS CONFUSING AND THUS WE MAY NOT BE ABLE TO DO THEM PERFECTLY UNDER STRESS CONDITIONS OF EXAM. END THE PHOBIA OF MATHEMATICS AND REASONING IF YOU WANT TO CLEAR CSAT

IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF CLEARING CSAT, NO MATTER HOW MUCH BETTER YOU HAVE DONE GS PRELIMS, YOUR MIND WILL NOT WANT TO STUDY AND THUS AN ENTIRE MONTH TILL RESULTS OF PRELIMS ARE RELEASED, EITHER WASTED COMPLETELY OR YOU STUDY WITH  SLACKNESS OR WITHOUT ANY INTEREST. SO TO AVOID ANYTHING OF THIS SORT, FOCUS ON CSAT.

Yasharth Shekhar Score in UPSC Exam

My score in 2019(1st attempt ) around 68( barely clearing csat) and after watching videos online on topics of CSAT and doing questions in the videos, my marks in CSAT in 2020(2nd attempt) was 110 and this year (when I did not have much time but thanks to videos I had watched earlier) my score was 92. Leaving aside the first attempt, I was confident in every attempt about clearing CSAT so i could focus on studies from day 2 onward(day 1 after pre i took a break)

Motivational Post by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

Hello Everyone! Congratulations to all those who cleared their prelims! Best of luck for the upcoming mains. For those who have not cleared, it is natural to feel sad, lost and all those feeling that dejection brings, but there is always a way. For me, the toughest day of my life was on 24th september when i was hyperventilating over non selection. But then there are better days ahead i must tell you!

Those who have cleared, start studying with the highest intensity that you can bring forth. For those who havent, take a rest, go for a vacation, and just dont think about the results( i know it’s very tough). First few days will be tough, and let things settle for a while and then MUST come back to the study table, analyse where you were lacking and get on with it

My personal experience: I was expecting much better marks in my essay paper but again sometimes your feelings about how your paper went and what you score do not necessarily align. I think where I went a little wrong was in choosing the essay topic in Part A, but that again is an analysis on my part. I WILL SHARE DETAILED STRATEGY LATER ON. KEEP PRACTISING MORE AND MORE ESSAYS TILL THEN

TEST SERIES I ENROLLED IN –  VISION IAS AND TRIUMPH IAS. YOU CAN CHOOSE ANYONE  IN THE MARKET BUT BE LOYAL TO IT.

Maps Preparation Strategy by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

HOW I MARKED PLACES ON MAP LIKE NATIONAL PARKS, ELEPHANT RESERVES, TIGER RESERVES? – I SEARCHED FOR EACH OF THEM ON GOOGLE MAPS AND ZOOMED IN AND ZOOMED OUT TO UNDERSTAND IF THERE IS ANY RIVER OF SIGNIFICANCE AROUND, OR A MOUNTAIN RANGE ON WHICH IT IS SITUATED. SEARCHING ON GOOGLE MAPS ALSO HELPED ME REMEMBER IT EASILY, AT LEAST THAT’S WHAT I THOUGHT! YOU CAN TRY THIS AND SEE IF THIS TECHNIQUE FITS YOU.

For eg when i searched for Satpura national park, you can observe there is a Tawa reservoir on Tawa river, which again is a tributary of Narmada river! Also on the photo is a place called Panchmarhi, and by that we have guessed that satpura national park must lie within Panchmarhi biosphere reserves! A further zoom put and you will realise it lies very close to the pench national park and very close to the source of origin of Tapi river(Betul). This way google maps can help in comprehensive study! Also you can then understand the relative location of Satpura hills!

Motivational quotes by Yasharth Shekhar UPSC Topper

There will be days when there is no motivation but what keeps us moving forward is our will to stick to the hard path we have chosen for our dreams- this is where discipline comes in. Discipline to study when you dont feel like it, discipline to stop studying your favourite subjects so you can study your least favourites ones! EVERYTHING COMES FROM DISCIPLINE!

Discipline is tough. Discipline is hard. Discipline is painful. Discipline is harsh. Discipline is a hard taskmaster. But the day you begin to enjoy the process and become friends with discipline, that day, my friends, is the day of your Nirvana!
PATIENCE+DISCIPLINE= MOST POWERFUL COCKTAIL OF ELEMENTS FOR YOUR JOURNEY!Discipline is tough. Discipline is hard. Discipline is painful. Discipline is harsh. Discipline is a hard taskmaster.
